Abstract
The application of geophysical prospecting techniques offers an opportunity to establish a fairly precise diagnosis of the state of the situation downstream of El Hadjar steel industry. The study is conducted by the use of electrical and magnetic prospecting methods as well as the characterization of the physical and chemical properties of rocks and waters in the region. Magnetic prospecting allowed us to determine the magnetic susceptibility of the rock samples and to confirm the presence of trace metal elements in the study area. Physico-chemical analyses of the water in the steel industry's drain channel were carried out in situ to determine the possible pollution generated by this metallurgical industry. The results show significant variations in the properties of the rocks, as well as a real contamination of the water by discharges from the steel industry, subsequently affecting Wadi Meboudja, Wadi Seybouse and finally reaching the Mediterranean Sea. This study highlights the importance of geophysical and hydrochemical techniques for effective environmental management and for minimizing the negative impacts of industrial activities on the environment.
